R & D Activities
Electric
Fuel is presently being funded within the framework of a BAA to
develop high energy density 4th-generation zinc-air technology.
Gen4 should be the ultimate design for a zinc-air cell and battery.
The cell is simply an air cathode folded around a gelled anode,
the cathode serving as the cell housing. The three open edges are
sealed for leak-tight integrity. This can-less bi-cell technology,
was initially demonstrated as a novel battery for the Marine Corps
Warfighting Laboratory Dragon Eye UAV program. Now adapted for more
moderate-power ground missions, with special focus as a battery
for an integrated warfighter power source, gen4 zinc-air has demonstrated
specific energies as high as 450 Wh/kg at the cell level.
Other R&D activities within the BAA framework
include cathode and ionic liquid development for Lithium-Air.
